The Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange, they received defenseman Ty Emberson and a 2025 third-round draft pick.

The Oilers announced the trade on X, saying,

"TRADE: The #Oilers have acquired defenceman Ty Emberson from San Jose in exchange for defenceman Cody Ceci & a 2025 third-round draft pick. #LetsGoOilers."

Ceci was close friends with Oilers star Leon Draisaitl. Last season, Draisaitl helped keep Ceci on the team during the trade deadline. With Ceci traded, many fans are now worried about how this might affect Draisaitl's future with the Oilers.

"Hope Leon is gonna re-sign still," one fan commented, showing concerns about Draisaitl’s long-term plans.

Fan reactions to the trade were mixed. Some supported the move as a necessary step for managing the Oilers’ salary cap.

"Great to see this! Now put Kane on LTIR and then trade another player... Welcome back Swedish King 👑 and Hollywood!! (I think, my numbers might be wrong)," one fan wrote.

Here are some more reactions from fans on X:

"Wishing Cody Ceci all the best and continued health and success in his career. He was unfortunately undervalued because Nurse haters hate and Ceci was his partner so he caught shrapnel. He brought great value and intangibles to the team and city. Godspeed," a fan said.
"I wish Cody and his family all the best. A smart, classy guy who lately endured the wrath of a vocal minority that has mastered the art of ruthless fandom," one fan wished him best.
"Never forget Cody Ceci’s game 7 clapbomb snipeski against Vancouver in Game 7," a fan wrote.
"Thanks for being a great Oiler Cecil 💙🧡 I will miss you. My heart hurts for you and your teammates 💔," a fan expressed.

Sharks GM Mike Grier calls Cody Ceci a "solid, competitive defenseman" in trade with Oilers

Sharks GM Mike Grier commented on the trade involving Ceci via NHL.com, saying:

“Cody is a solid, competitive veteran defenseman who brings a well-rounded skill set to our group. He’s a strong penalty killer who can also contribute offensively, and he brings extensive playoff experience. We’re excited to have him join our organization."

Ceci, 30, had 25 points in 79 regular-season games and five points in 24 playoff games last season. He helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final but is under contract for one more season at $3.25 million per year.

Emberson, 24, scored 10 points in 30 games during his rookie season with the Sharks. He was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018 and signed a one-year deal with San Jose in July.
