Fights are common inside the rink but during intense encounters, they tend to spill over to the stands between fans. This was the case during the Philadelphia Flyers' 3-2 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
After the game, two fans wearing Maple Leafs jerseys were ironically waving goodbye to the Flyers fans in the stands. One person wearing a Philadelphia Eagles jacket walked up to the pair and started throwing heavy punches at them.
Fans were outraged after the video was circulated on various social media sites. They took to X to give their reactions.
"Hopefully he got arrested and banned for life," a fan said.
"Nothing says noob behavior like sucker punching two obnoxious Leafs fans during game 41 of an 82 game season. Sad and pathetic," another fan wrote.
"It's so weird to us that you all cheer on assaults like that. Really descriptive of you as a whole nation, really," a Canadian fan said.
"2 sucker punches, 0 knockouts," a fan tried to troll the Philadelphia man.
"Pathetic Philly fan for doing this. He should be banned for coming to games for life," a fan made his opinions known.
"Philly is an embarrassment," another fan said.
The City of Brotherly Love as they call Philadelphia is known to be a place for fights and clashes between fans. In a past incident, the Philadelphia Eagles fans also got into a scuffle with New England Patriots fans in the streets after Super Bowl LII.
Flyers' frustration growing evident after latest string of losses
It is certainly a different atmosphere in the Flyers camp since last season where they had 22 wins at the halfway stage. Currently, they have a 17-19-5 record and are sixth in the Metropolitan Division. Their coach, John Tortorella, remarked on his team's current state after their game against the Leafs.
"We have defined our style of play, I think we're pretty comfortable how we're going to play," Tortorella said Tuesday. "I think some guys have steadily improved. I think some guys have put themselves in the conversation of still being evaluated. And that's a big part of what this year is about."
While they couldn't emulate the first half, Philadelphia would certainly hope to not replicate the second half of the 2023-24 season. A big collapse dropped them out of playoff contention.
