Hockey fans were left stunned on Tuesday after the St. Louis Blues scored three goals in just over two minutes to defeat the Seattle Kraken 3-2 in the Kraken's home opener at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Kraken jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period off goals from Vince Dunn and Eeli Tolvanen. However, the Blues scored three goals in under two minutes to flip the game on its head.
Jordan Kyrou scored twice for the Blues to level the game, before Philip Broberg found the game-winning goal shortly after.
Many fans took to social media to express their disbelief at Seatle's epic collapse to St. Louis.
"Lots of room to grow. The team showed some grit at the end. Looking forward to the rest of the season!" one fan wrote on X/Twitter.
"Is the season over yet? First game but my god this team never changes. You could show games from every year, and it’s gonna look IDENTICAL," another fan wrote.
"Despite the loss I had a fun and electric time at the home opener, the in-person game as always a blast, also I'm starting to realize while we all love Grub he's not that great Joey needs to be in the net more overall had a fun time at Climate Pledge Arena," one fan commented.
"Game one, so I won't be too harsh... but finishing games while up 1-2 goals was the problem last season, so this is disappointing," another fan wrote.
Blues goalie Jordan Binnington stopped 30 shots, while Philipp Grubauer made 22 saves for Seattle.
Seattle Kraken' Vince Dunn on 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues
Defenseman Vince Dunn commented on the defeat post-game, citing Seattle's inability to maintain momentum as a key factor in the loss (via The Spokesman Review):
"Losing the momentum that dramatically, it’s sometimes hard to get back," Dunn said. "Letting a team back into the game like that is not what you want."
He acknowledged that giving up the lead was disappointing but remained optimistic about bouncing back.
"First one’s out of the way. We’ve got 81 more opportunities to play well. There’s no doubt in my mind, we’ll bounce back from this one," he added.
The Seattle Kraken will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Xcel Energy Center to take on the Minnesota Wild in their second game of the season under new head coach Dan Bylsma.
