NHL legend Sidney Crosby is currently preparing to enter the last year of his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. So far, he and the Penguins have yet to reach an agreement regarding an extension. While it has continued to look as though an extension will be finalized before training camp starts, some fans have begun to wonder whether or not a trade could happen.

Crosby has been eligible to sign a deal since the start of free agency, and given that he is destined to have his jersey hung in the Penguins' rafters, the belief heading into this summer was that an extension would be priority No. 1 for Pittsburgh.

Early on in free agency, The Athletic reported that the details of an extension were nearly finalized, however, there has been no further update. While the most likely scenario is that an extension comes to fruition that keeps Crosby in a Penguins jersey for the remainder of his career, fans are getting anxious.

TSN's Jesse Pollock took to X, formerly known as Twitter, this week, wondering whether there's a chance Sidney Crosby could wind up getting traded given the delay in an extension.

NHL fans were quick to react to the post, debating on Crosby's future.

"Yeah I’m hearing to the Flyers," one wrote.
"To Colorado yes," another said.

Others weren't sold on the idea of a potential trade:

"There is 0 chance he leaves. He will finish his career here in Pittsburgh," one fan said.
"Nah Pittsburgh reports are saying he’s figuring out term. Not sure how much longer he wants to play and doesn’t want to screw the penguins over in the future if he doesn’t play through the contract," another added.

Others weighed in on Sidney Crosby's future:

"Nope... 2 year contract extension to get to the 2026 Olympics than he retires after that season..... I'm taking bets now," a fan said.
"He's more likely to retire then be traded at the end of his contract," another said.

Looking at the latest reports regarding Sidney Crosby's extension

As many fans were quick to point out in response to Jesse Pollock, the expectation had been that Sidney Crosby, who is notoriously superstitious, would sign his extension on Aug. 7 (8-7), which coincides with his jersey number and his birthday. Despite that, Aug. 7 has come and gone without any word on a Sidney Crosby extension.

As others pointed out, Crosby spends his summers outside of the U.S., which would explain why he hasn't met with the Penguins' front office to finalize an extension.

On Thursday, The Athletic reported that Crosby has been open about his intention to re-sign, and rather than the delay being a cause for concern, it's indicative of the trust between the two sides.

At the same time, the report said that the two sides are on the same page when it comes to the terms of the contract, which have been a major talking point given that Crosby is now 37 years old.

Currently, the belief still seems to be that Crosby will sign a three-year extension that would keep him on the Penguins' roster until he's 40 years old, however, until a deal is finalized, fans will have to wait and see how the saga plays out.
