NHL fans are not happy about the Edmonton Oilers hiring Stan Bowman as their general manager. Bowman is the former GM of the Chicago Blackhawks and led them to multiple Stanley Cups.
However, Bowman had been ineligible to work in the NHL since the Kyle Beach scandal, where the former Blackhawks player was sexually assaulted by a coach and Bowman was aware of it but did not take any action.
Stan Bowman was reinstated by the NHL, becoming eligible to be hired as of July 1. He is one of the top executives in the NHL having worked with the Blackhawks in some capacity from 2005 to 2021 and helping lead the team to three Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Despite his credentials, many fans expressed disappointment after his hiring by the Oilers..
"Fans don’t want this clown hired. Awful decision," a fan said.
"Is there literally no one else in the whole world of hockey who could do this job better than or as well as Stan Bowman? Because, if there is, the Oilers should hire that person instead," a fan said.
Other fans, meanwhile, agreed and aren't happy that the Oilers decided to hire Bowman.
"I'm so utterly ashamed of my team. I will not buy a ticket nor a single piece of merchandise as long as this man is employed by the Oilers," a fan said.
Although Bowman is considered one of the best general managers in NHL history, fans don't think he should be in the NHL after the Kyle Beach scandal.
"No oiler fan wanted this," a fan said.
"First Jeff Jackson L of the summer. Nice way to poo poo on the summer of an almost Stanley Cup parade," another fan said.
It's clear Oilers fans aren't happy with the team hiring Bowman to be their new GM.
Oilers eager to hire Stan Bowman
The Edmonton Oilers announced the hiring of Stan Bowman on Wednesday and Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson issued a statement saying how excited he is for the hiring.
"I am excited and pleased to be welcoming Stan to the Edmonton Oilers," Jackson said in a statement (per SportsNet). "I believe his vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization."
"Through our many conversations, we share a common vision of where we are as a team and what is required to achieve another Stanley Cup title."
Bowman becomes the 11th general manager in Oilers history after Ken Holland completed his contract and decided to mutually part ways.
