Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella is never one to hold back. Known for speaking his mind and always expressing his true feelings, he doesn’t shy away from any subject, no matter who may oppose him.
On Thursday night, Tortorella and the Flyers were beaten by the Dallas Stars, with a 4-1 final score at Wells Fargo Center. Afterward, Tortorella issued an apology for what he felt was a mistake on his part in not calling a timeout after the Stars scored twice in quick fashion.
"I think I made a mistake in the game against Dallas when they bang-banged us two goals, if I replay it again, and I make a ton of mistakes in the game, I should have called a time out," he said. "You could feel the building, the air just came out of the building, and I felt it. I should have stopped. I should have regrouped and said something, and I didn't."
"I think I made a mistake there, just to kind of change where we're at. The thing with timeouts that I'm always concerned about, whenever you call one and you don't want to yell, you just want to calm things down and maybe even loosen them up," he continued.
"So that's why I try to stay away from, in certain situations, from timeouts. I made a mistake. I should have.
Timeouts are taken customarily by coaches either late in regulation in order to try and draw up a play for their team to get back into the game or to slow the momentum down of the opposition after a quick barrage. Tortorella acknowledged that he should have called a 30-second timeout to slow things down and have his club regroup for better performance.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday night at home against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Flyers were defeated by the Stars 4-1
The Stars picked up their sixth consecutive victory with their 4-1 triumph over the Flyers thanks to a pair of first period goals from Mavrik Bourque and Roope Hintz.
