Alex Ovechkin and Marc-André Fleury shared a funny moment during Thursday’s game between the Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild. In the second period, Ovechkin scored his 18th goal of the season with a power-play snap at 15:08. Dylan Strome assisted him to tie the game 2-2.

Ovechkin then joked with Fleury in the final minute of the second period after Fleury stopped a rebound.

"I told him, 'I need one more,'" Ovechkin said after the game, via Monumental Sports Network's Ethan Cadeaux. "He said, 'You already got one.'"

The exchange showed respect between Ovechkin and Fleury who have faced each other for nearly two decades.

The game could be one of their last matchups as Fleury’s career winds down. Their rivalry started when Fleury was with the Pittsburgh Penguins and included playoff battles and memorable moments. Ovechkin has scored more goals against Fleury than any other goalie, with 41 including the playoffs. On Thursday, his goal brought him closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record, with 871 career goals, just 24 shy of the all-time mark.

Marc-André Fleury, one of the NHL’s greatest goalies, has also left his mark. He ranks second in NHL history with 568 wins. Despite allowing many goals to Ovechkin, Fleury joked about it.

"I feel fortunate I was able to play in this time," Fleury said on Thursday, via NHL.com, "He probably owes me a few things for scoring so many goals on me. I helped it out pretty good. I'm glad I got to face him. He's one of the best and always brings the best out of you. It's been fun battles with him."

Alex Ovechkin returned the praise.

"Yeah, it's 20 years we play against each other," Ovechkin said. "It's always fun. It's always a challenge. He's one of the best goalies out there and it's a huge challenge for me to play against him."

Capitals forward Tom Wilson noted the respect between the two players and how much he appreciates watching them play.

"I think he's a guy (that) when he's gone, the game will miss him," Wilson said.'He's fun to have in the League. He's a heck of a goalie. We've had a lot of battles against him. I think 'O' and him, you see them smiling back and forth. Game respects game. It's fun to see two all-time legends going at it and having a front-row seat to that."

Fleury secured the Wild’s 4-3 shootout win by stopping Ovechkin’s final attempt. Fleury hinted that this could be his last season, but he hopes to face Ovechkin again when the Capitals visit Minnesota in March.
