Fans reacted as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 on Friday night, but one goal in particular left fans scratching their heads.
Early in the second period, Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard scored to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead. The Penguins challenged the goal, alleging that the play should have been called offside. After a lengthy video review, the call on the ice stood, and the goal counted.
That sent fans on social media into a frenzy, with one tweeting:
"Idk how this counted. ... I’m an oilers fan."
Another simply tweeted:
"Offside”
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Absolutely offside but it’s the Oilers. NHL was never going to overturn that," one wrote on X.
"Probably not but this picture shows the puck not yet in the zone and the skate not yet in the zone so no idea," another fan wrote.
"I thought it was offside but I get why it was ruled a goal. It was ruled a goal on the ice; they need conclusive evidence to overturn. On the next slide, the puck is arguably over the line, thus they cant 100% prove it was offside, even if we logically can deduct it was," a user noted.
"Can't tell in this frame. Both the puck and his back skate are over the line still," another user wrote.
The lack of a clear camera angle on the entry left many scratching their heads after the review upheld the Oilers' goal.
Game recap: Penguins' 4-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers
Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring for the Edmonton Oilers in the second period with a placed shot from the right face off circle that got past Penguins goalkeeper Joel Blomqvist on the blocker side, putting the Oilers 1-0 ahead.
In the second period, Evan Bouchard made it 2-0. The relentless attack persisted 16 seconds into the third period as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins seized a bouncing puck near the Penguins net and extended the Oilers' lead to 3-0.
Subsequently, the Oilers' power play unit contributed to the scoring spree as Mattias Ekholms' wrist shot from the point found its way through a defense and into the net, making it 4-0.
Joel Blomqvist made 46 saves in the loss for the Penguins, while the Edmonton Oilers cruised behind a stellar 27-save performance from Stuart Skinner. The Oilers next face the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, while the Penguins take on the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
