NHL fans react as Jake Oettinger signs $66M contract extension with Dallas Stars

Jake Oettinger has agreed to a major contract extension with the Dallas Stars on Thursday. The star goaltender is yet another in a rash of major signings for the position across hockey. Oettinger will be part of the Dallas core for a long time.

NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman and David Pagnotta reported the news on X.

"Can confirm Dallas has agreed to terms on an 8-year, $66M contract extension with Jake Oettinger," Pagnotta tweeted.

Naturally, a move this significant sent NHL Twitter into a frenzy. The fans had their say on a stunning development. Not all of them were pleased with how much the Stars spent, while others reflected on how this affects others.

"Holy overpay," a fan said.

"Overpay for a goalie that can’t even beat Stuart Skinner in net," one joked.
"They really said copy paste from the Sway deal, well deserved though," another said.

This is Oettinger's fifth year in the NHL, all with the Stars.

"Igor agent in shambles," a fan wrote.

"All that just to not save a beach ball against Edmonton in playoffs," one complained.
"Good price, Oettinger clearly wants to win. Wish I could say the same about my greedy a** goalie," another chimed in.

Goalies continue to get paid after Jake Oettinger extension

Jake Oettinger is the latest goalkeeper to get a major contract extension. He signed for eight years and $66 million, the same deal that the Boston Bruins finally inked Jeremy Swayman on Oct. 6.

Additionally, Linus Ullmark got a major deal done at the same time. He signed with the Ottawa Senators for four years and $33 million, the same AAV as Swayman and Oettinger.

All this is happening while Igor Shesterkin remains firmly planted in contract discussions with the New York Rangers. He has reportedly declined an $11 million AAV deal, which would blow all three of the above goalies out of the water, and is still negotiating. These deals likely won't impact his eventual tag since he's asking for so much more.
