The Toronto Maple Leafs entered this season with Ilya Samsonov as their starting goaltender, but that may not be the case not even a month into the season.
Samsonov has struggled to begin the year and was replaced by Joseph Woll in Saturday's comeback win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Woll will now be in the net for Toronto on Tuesday night against the Washington Capitals.
After replacing Samsonov and shutting the door on the Lightning, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe had nothing but praise for Woll, according to TSN's Mark Masters:
“Outstanding. These are not easy times, right? Coming into a game like that, really, there is no margin for error. For him to stand his ground the way that he did was great. He has been great. I thought he played well in the start that he had.
"In practice this week, he was outstanding and competitive. To see him step in and do the job for our guys tonight was really huge. It is another young guy coming up in a big moment for us.”
With Woll getting the start on Tuesday night, you should be rolling with the American goalie in fantasy hockey. If Woll plays well Tuesday, and it's against a struggling Washington Capitals team, and he continues to succeed, he will be the starting goalie for the foreseeable future.
Joseph Woll & Ilya Samsonov's stats
Joseph Woll took over for Ilya Samsonov last year in the playoffs after the Russian got hurt. Entering this season, Woll was the backup but after some bad performances from Samsonov, the American looks like he will be the starting goalie.
This season in two games, Woll is 1-1 with a 1.69 GAA and a .947 SV%. Last year in the playoffs, Woll was 1-2 with a 2.43 GAA and a .915 SV%.
Ilya Samsonov, meanwhile, has been terrible to begin the season, as he has a 4.34 GAA and a .831 SV%.
Samsonov was pulled in Saturday's game and it's uncertain when he may get another start.
