Montreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault, quite like other goalies in the league, has had a couple of customized helmets. Pictures of an iconic Habs goalie mask has been making the rounds on the internet.
Many assumed it might be Montembeault’s new mask for the next season.
“Looks like Sam Montembeault’s new Habs goalie mask will feature Jacques Plante, Carey Price, Leonard Cohen & the iconic Montreal Farine Five Roses sign 🔥”, the X account of HabsOnReddit tweeted.
The designed mask features legends of the game, including former ice hockey pro Jacques Plante and teammate Carey Price. It also featured Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist, Leonard Cohen.
Another iconic illustration on the helmet is that of the Farine Five Roses sign, an iconic landmark in Montreal, Quebec. It's a large, illuminated rooftop sign advertising the Five Roses flour brand which has been part of the city's skyline since the 1940s.
However, later, the X account clarified that the mask doesn't belong to the Montreal Canadiens goalie.
“False alarm, this goalie mask was made for someone else as a birthday gift. Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful mask design,” it tweeted.
It was originally designed as a birthday present for someone by Sylvie Marsolais & Alexandre Mathys. They are 'professional airbrush artists specialized in photorealism artwork on goalie masks for the NHL, AHL, KHL, ECHL, SwissA and more' per their X bio.
Fans react to iconic Montreal Canadiens goalie mask design
Although the mask wasn’t meant for Sam Montembeault, fans were quick to react to its design.
Many found the helmet unique and praised its artwork. Some even pointed out that Carey Price had set his legacy in stone and is now being featured on goalie masks.
Following are some fan reactions on X/Twitter:
“Carey Price already on a goalie mask mean so much.”
“A real Beauty!” quipped one user.
“Nowhere else in the world like it, love Montréal,” tweeted one fan.
Some fans pointed out that the helmet was not for the Habs goalie but still appreciated the design on the mask.
“It’s not Monty’s, despite the familiar design,” wrote one user.
“Bro this mask is FIRE,” commented one fan.
“This goes crazy hard,” quipped another user.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens will look to regroup in the offseason after yet another disappointing campaign in 2023-24.
