Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard tapped out from a chokehold from Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.
In MMA, tapping out signals you are done, and the person lets you go and the fight is over, but Ekblad continued to hold onto the choke.
After the game, fans had a good laugh over the incident.
"Is chocking a legal hockey play now?," a fan wrote.
"UFC NHL colab. But jeez. Florida is so dirty," another fan added.
Other fans, meanwhile, thought there should have been a penalty for it.
"NHL refs are the worst," a fan added.
""We don't enforce rules in the finals." -NHL," another fan added.
Fans also thought this showed that the Florida Panthers are a dirty team.
"Wtf kinda league is this. Wanted to see the panthers win but not like this," another fan added.
"How did this not also get a penalty?," a fan added.
Many NHL fans thought a penalty should have been called on Aaron Ekblad for choking Evan Bouchard during a scrum.
Oilers focused on turning the offense around
The Edmonton Oilers are down 2-0 in the best-of-seven series. Edmonton was shut out 3-0 in Game 1 and lost 4-1 in Game 2. The Oilers have had a hard time scoring on Sergei Bobrovsky and forward Zach Hyman knows the offense has to be better.
“They played better than we did,” Hyman said, via NHL.com. “We didn't have as many looks (as Game 1). We weren't playing with enough pace, they were controlling the play for the majority of the game. You’ve got to find a way to score.”
Oilers captain Connor McDavid, meanwhile, had similar comments to Hyman, but he has confidence his team will be able to find a way to score more.
“We have to work our way out of it,” McDavid said. “It always starts with work with our group. They are a unique penalty kill just like they are a unique team.
"They’re aggressive. We have to have guys ready to get the puck. We’ve got to have guys making good plays. You’ve got to be able to string together good plays and we haven’t been able to do that.”
Game 3 is set for Thursday, June 13, at 8 p.m. ET in Edmonton.
