Is Macklin Celebrini related to NBA Hall of Famer Steve Nash?

Macklin Celebrini, who was drafted first overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2024 NHL draft is not related to Steve Nash.

Celebrini was born in North Vancouver to Rick and Robyn. His dad played for the Vancouver 86ers, a pro soccer team but is more known for his career in the NBA. Rick Celebrini was the Golden State Warriors director of sports medicine and performance and is now the Vice President of Player Health and Performance.

"Our parents have done such a good job of teaching us how to act the right way, how to carry ourselves the right way," Macklin said, via ESPN. "That's something me and my siblings have all learned. You're never bigger than anyone because of success or anything. It all comes from how good of a person you are and that's something they've preached to us. Just be a good person first."

Macklin grew up around the game of basketball, due to his dad, and became very close with Steve Nash. The families grew so close together that while Macklin was growing up he called the NBA Hall of Famer his uncle, but there is no true relation to him.

Macklin has two brothers, Aiden and R.J., and a sister, Charlie. Aiden also plays hockey and was drafted in the sixth round, 171st overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2023. R.J., meanwhile, is 11 and says he wants to follow in his brother's footsteps to make the NHL. Charlie, meanwhile, is a tennis player.

Macklin Celebrini drafted first overall by San Jose

The San Jose Sharks drafted Macklin Celebrini first overall in the 2024 NHL draft.

Celebrini played last season at Boston University and won the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey. According to NHL Central Scouting, they view Celebrini like Jonathan Toews.

"The last guy that comes to mind for me is Jonathan Toews," said Central Scouting's John Williams. "As a 17-year-old, they have similar size and are similar in terms of their ability to play the full 200-foot game. For him to step in and do what he's done is phenomenal, so he deserves all the accolades he's getting."

Last season at BU, Celebrini recorded 32 goals and 32 assists for 64 points. He's undecided if he will go to the NHL or return to school next season.
