Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had some words of wisdom for teammates Mitch Marner and Joseph Woll after watching a clip of them singing during Thursday night’s Kygo concert. Sportsnet reporter Anna Dua shared Matthews’ priceless reaction in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Auston Matthews this morning on Mitch Marner and Joseph Woll joining Kygo on stage. 'it was something… I could only watch it once,'” Dua wrote.
Matthews doesn’t see a future for Marner or Woll as singers if his Friday reaction is to be believed. Dua also shared Leafs coach Craig Berube’s views about the viral clip on X (formerly Twitter).
“Craig Berube on this performance by Joseph Woll… 'Stick to playing piano,'” Dua posted.
The off-field hijinks follow the Maple Leafs’ 5-1 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets and might lift the team’s morale. Wednesday’s game was also the first time this season that veteran Leafs right wing Ryan Reaves dropped gloves for a fight. Reaves got into a punching exchange with Blue Jackets enforcer Mathieu Olivier less than two minutes into the game.
In a postgame presser, Matthews expressed disappointment at the crowd’s reaction to the brawl.
"Would have liked a little more energy from the crowd after that,” Matthews said via NHL.com. “It was a little quiet tonight, especially after two guys like that go at it."
He also praised Reaves’ determination, saying the 38-year-old was “still a big part of the team.”
Auston Matthews comments on a bizarre stick incident involving Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins
Auston Matthews also explained the incident in the first period when he and Blue Jackets netminder Elvis Merzlikins were assessed a minor penalty for playing with illegal equipment. In the latter half of the first period, Merzilikns plucked Auston Matthews’ stick from his hands while the puck was still live, dropping his own. In response, Matthews picked up Merzlikins's discarded stick.
“Yeah, he took my stick out of my hand, so I just saw his stick and decided to play with his for a second,” Matthews said. “So, I mean, yeah, I don't know. I've got to read the rule book, I guess.”
Both teams played 4-on-4 for a while, but the Leafs’ best attacker sitting in the penalty box during the penalty likely put them at a greater disadvantage.
Matthews will be in action on Saturday when the Maple Leafs take on the Ottawa Senators.
