The Calgary Flames are in the race for the wild card spot in the Pacific Division and are in fifth place. The Mar. 3 trade deadline is nearing, and the Flames were expected to add some players to help them solidify their wild card spot and make a deep run into the playoffs, but they have decided to stay quiet.
When asked if the Flames and GM Brad Treliving are going to be active in the trade deadline, TSN Calgary Bureau Chief Salim Valji said that the Flames will stay quiet heading towards the end of the trade deadline:
"I think Treliving and the Flames are going to prioritize being responsible at this deadline."
Valjij added that the Calgary Flames have had a disappointing season. Heading into the 2022-23 season, they were expected to be one of the best teams in the league but have found it very difficult to be consistent in their performances.
"We've had various points where we thought the Flames were going to show up with the very best and truest version of themselves. But they are still yet to win more than three consecutive games."
The Flames have shown glimpses of the team that everyone expected them to be, winning 3-2 in overtime against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
They have also lost to teams at the bottom of the standings. In a matchup where the Flames were clear favorites, the Ottawa Senators took the win in overtime. This season, the Flames have failed to win more than three straight games. Valji said:
"We've had various points where we thought the Calgary Flames were going to show their best, whether it was that game at Madison Square Garden or whether it was after the heartbreaking loss to Ottawa."
Valji reiterated that the Flames will be silent near the end of the trade deadline. They might bring in a depth-defenseman or make an addition to their fourth line but might not be involved in any blockbuster trade.
"This organization is in a little bit of a holding pattern. I won't anticipate they do much, though. Probably alter the fringes of their roster, maybe bring in a depth-defenseman or someone that can give fourth-line a jolt"
What went wrong for Calgary Flames this season?
The Calgary Flames had an amazing start to the season with three consecutive wins against top-tier teams like the Avalanche, Oilers and Knights. However, they hit a slump in November, losing ten of 15 games.
Elias Lindholm, who recently became a father, and Tyler Toffoli have been the top scorers for the Flames, with both tied at 49 points. Nazim Kadri has been chipping in as well, amassing 41 points from 57 games.
If the Calgary Flames want to make the NHL playoffs, they will have to improve their defense and string together a couple of wins.
