Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun lauded Alex Ovechkin for achieving a significant milestone. The Capitals forward has broken the NHL record for most goalies scored on.

Ovechkin’s feat came during a 1-0 overtime victory against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night. The Russian forward scored the only goal of the game in a three-on-three extra frame against rookie netminder Leevi Merilainen.

Merilainen became the 179th goalie Ovechkin has scored against, pushing the latter past a tie with Jaromir Jagr.

Chychrun shared a celebratory post on his Instagram Story. The post comprises a hockey card featuring a floating head wearing a goalie helmet made up of the names of the goalies Ovechkin has scored against. It is titled “179 tendies” and the caption at the bottom reads:

“Alex Ovechkin has set the NHL record for most goaltenders (179) scored on in league history.”

Chychrun added a congratulatory message to the post as well. It read:

Ovechkin achieved this feat when he received a pass from Rasmus Sandin on a 2-on-1 breakaway and buried the puck in the back of the net.

“I knew I should take a shot as soon as I can because I thought he may be thinking I will pass it back to ‘Sandy,’” Ovechkin said via NHL.com. “It was a good one, and it went in, so I’ll take it.”

Capitals goalie Logan Thompson had a good night as well. He made 24 saves in his second consecutive shutout for the team.

Jakob Chychrun’s post highlighted only one of Alex Ovechkin’s records this season

Chychrun’s laudatory post is set to be the first of many as records are tumbling for Ovechkin this season. Two games ago, he joined Gordie Howe to become only the second player in NHL history to score 20 goals or more in 20 consecutive seasons.

His goal on Thursday was his 27th career overtime winner; he's now one goal away from tying Jagir for the most in NHL history.

Ovechkin is also closing in on Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals scored in the NHL. Ovechkin has 874 goals in his career, 21 short of breaking Gretzky’s record. Given his scoring history this season of 21 goals in 29 games, he is set to overhaul ‘The Great One’ soon.

This is Chychrun’s first season playing alongside Ovechkin and the Capitals. The Russian has spent his entire NHL career with the Washington team.
