The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday night, with defenseman Jeff Petry scoring twice to lead the way. His wife Julie Petry was in attendance at the Little Caesars Arena on the night.

Detroit opened the scoring at 9:07 of the first period when Petry fired a wrist shot from the right point past a screened Joseph Woll. Julie Petry was quick to react to her beau’s first goal of the season as she reposted a clip of the goal from the Red Wings’ instagram account to her own stories.

Toronto tied the game 1-1 with 8:20 left in the second period on a power-play goal by Auston Matthews, who beat Ville Husso with a slap shot from the right side. The Red Wings regained the lead late in the second period as with just 17.8 seconds remaining, Moritz Seider elevated a shot over Woll’s left pad off a pass from Andrew Copp.

However, the Maple Leafs equalized again early in the third period when Matthew Knies redirected a Mitch Marner shot past Husso at 1:07. Just 44 seconds later, Jeff Petry scored his second of the night by shoveling in a rebound from J.T. Compher’s initial shot to make it 3-2.

Julie reposted another clip of Petry’s second goal on her stories, writing:

After the game, Jeff Petry opened up on the win, pointing out how important it was to start strong as the team had set a goal to do well in the five games leading up to Christmas, and this win was a good start.

“It was a big win for us, you know, we've been on, you know, the losing end of a few games that we probably played well enough to win. And those one goal games, to play a game like that and to get the results, I think, is as big for our group.”

The defenseman said the team played a solid game overall, though they made some mistakes with the puck in the second period, which gave the Leafs chances to make a comebt. After discussing it during the intermission, they fixed those issues and focused on their forechecking and cycling the puck, which wore the Leafs down. Petry praised his teammates for doing the hard work in those areas.

He also talked about how important it was for defensemen to contribute offensively. Petry said that cycling the puck, taking shots from the point, and getting rebounds are key to creating gritty goals, which can lift the team when scoring isn’t coming easily.
