John Shannon, Matt Sekers indulge in heated debate over Colin Campbell's Hockey Hall of Fame induction

"Seekers & Price" sports talk show host Matt Sekers and sportscaster John Shannon engaged in a heated debate over Colin Campbell's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The discussion between the two hockey pundits got quite intense as they delved into Campbell's controversial legacy within the NHL. That happened after the announcement of the induction of Campbell into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024 as a builder.

Shannon was in full defense of Campbell's induction into the HOF, emphasizing his significant contributions to the sport over the decades.

"First of all, Campbell is a friend of mine. I make no bones about it. But Colin Campbell has had more impact in the last two and a half decades to the success of the game, and the speed of the game, and the way the game has played than anyone else," Shannon said.
"Anyone else who doubts that he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame should be ashamed of themselves because they haven't done the due diligence to understand his impact and importance to the game," he added.

In response to Shannon's defense of Campbell, Sekers strongly opposed the idea. He expressed disbelief at the notion that Campbell's hard work alone justified his place in the Hall of Fame, emphasizing the damaging impact of the leaked emails that revealed his actions.

"I know he's an Executive Vice President and whatever title as long as Pittsburgh, but Colin Campbell has worked his a** off, so I guess I make this game better. I guess I will sit here in my shame. This is a person who, as director of officiating or director of hockey operations, intimidate officials in his charge to benefit his son's club," Seekers responded.
"That's right there. That is disqualification from his position in the NHL, let alone the Hockey Hall of Fame. It's all there in the emails, John," he added.

In November 2010, there was quite a stir in the NHL world when media outlets revealed a series of emails from Colin Campbell, the senior vice president of hockey operations at the time. These emails were brought into the spotlight during a legal battle involving referee Dean Warren and the NHL.

In the emails, Campbell was caught calling out the Boston Bruins' Marc Savrd as a "little fake artist" after Warren had penalized Campbell's son, Gregory Campbell, for high-sticking Savard.

Campbell also sent emails to the director of officiating, Stephen Walkom, expressing his displeasure with referees. Walkom had penalized Gregory, who was playing with the Florida Panthers at that time, late in the game, resulting in a game-tying goal.

Colin Campbell later admitted in an interview that the content of the emails was inappropriate. Despite the controversy and the acknowledgment of inappropriate behavior and biased accusations, the NHL showed strong support for Campbell.

He remained in his position as the senior vice president before stepping down on June 1, 2011.

Colin Campbell was 'shocked' after learning about his HOF induction

Many refer to Campbell as a villain in the NHL due to his enforcer and disciplinary actions as the NHL's senior executive vice president of hockey operations.

He was taken aback when he got a call from the Hockey Hall of Fame, where he learned about his induction into the HOF as part of the Class of 24 in the builder category.

"Kind of shocking," he said NHL.com.

Apart from the executive roles, Campbell had an 11-year career in the NHL as a defenseman. He played for the likes of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers.
