Late NHL player Johnny Gaudreau’s father Guy Gaudreau took to the ice with his son’s junior team, the Dubuque Fighting Saints, on Friday. The franchise is organizing a special ceremony on Saturday to honor Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau.
The USHL’s official Instagram account posted about Guy joining the team on the ice and said:
"Guy Gaudreau skated with the @fightingsaints this morning ahead of Gaudreau Remembrance Night tomorrow in Dubuque."
There was a surge of supportive messages on social media following the announcement.
"I truly love that everytime a team that honors the brothers invites their father to coach the team it gives him a chance to relive the memories he had when coaching his sons," one user commented.
Gaudreau, who won the Clark Cup in his only season with the Fighting Saints in 2010-11, also became part-owner of the franchise before the 2018-19 season. The team announced that they would be retiring Gaudreau’s No. 8 jersey, and the USHL would also be instituting an award to honor the brothers.
The Gaudreau brothers died in a road accident on August 29, 2024 in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The siblings who were in town to attend their sister Katie’s wedding, were riding bicycles when they were hit by a car allegedly driven by a drunk driver.
Johnny Gaudreau’s family share photos of him and Matthew in remembrance
Johnny Gaudreau’s wife Meredith Gaudreau on Friday posted a montage of family photos on Instagram ahead of the latest event to be held in his honor.
She captioned the story:
“As if the $10 target pjs weren’t already my favorite before”
The pictures showed the couple sitting in their pajamas on a couch with their daughter Noa and son Johnny. The 1-time All-Star and his family were wearing white T-shirts and matching red, black and white plaid pajamas.
On Friday, Johnny Gaudreau's sister, Katie Gaudreau also reposted a throwback photo, of her and her siblings, that was clicked 14 years ago.
