Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew died in a bike accident on Aug. 29. They were allegedly hit by a driver under the influence in their hometown of Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The brothers were in town for their sister's wedding.
Despite the tragedy, Meredith’s posts remind fans of the happy moments shared by the Gaudreau family. Johnny’s legacy lives on through his family and hockey career.
The Blue Jackets celebrated their 6-2 win against the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, led by Mathieu Olivier’s first two-goal game in the NHL.
Johnny Gaudreau received love from his teammates
On Oct. 14, Meredith Gaudreau shared a touching photo of Johnny Gaudreau's Calgary Flames teammate Sean Monahan holding their baby, Johnny Jr. Monahan wore a hoodie with "Gaudreau" on it and Meredith captioned the picture:
"Uncle Muncy with the special touch for baby Johnny."
Monahan received the first "donkey" cap after the Blue Jackets' 6-4 win over the Avalanche two days before, which had a "13" patch on it. He had a strong game as he scored a power-play goal and provided two assists.
Meredith then shared a tribute from Erik Gudbranson’s family. Erik’s wife, Sarah, posted pictures of their children wearing custom sweaters with Johnny's jersey number. Meredith reshared it and added, "Love these little guys."
Meredith also thanked Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf for wearing a custom mask honoring Johnny. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins also honored Johnny by painting No. 13 on his mask. The team hung Johnny’s jersey in the locker room during their opening game against the Wild. These tributes reflect the respect and affection Johnny’s teammates and the hockey community have for him.
