Joseph Woll injury: What happened to Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender?

Toronto Maple Leafs v Dallas Stars
Joseph Woll injury update by Leafs HC Sheldon Keefe

Joseph Woll left Thursday's game against the Senators with an apparent left leg injury, as reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The incident unfolded in the third period, following a crucial save that saw Woll requiring assistance to leave the ice. Friedman followed up his initial report by noting that the goaltender had indeed suffered a high ankle sprain and was listed week-to-week.

Woll's departure raises concerns about the team's goaltending situation. Having been a stabilizing force in the Maple Leafs' net, Woll's absence could leave a significant void. The goaltender managed an impressive 29 saves on 31 shots before the injury occurred.

Martin Jones was the backup goalie for the Leafs tonight. If Woll is sidelined indefinitely, the responsibility of guarding the net may fall on Jones for the next couple of games.

Ilya Samsonov is also expected to return from his illness and take back his starting spot in Woll's absence.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an initial update on Joseph Woll's injury:

"He's going to miss time for sure. We'll determine the extent of it once we get home."

Toronto Maple Leafs fans were concerned about the extent of Woll's injury given the netminder's recent performances.

Maple Leafs camp react to Joseph Woll's injury

Head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed his disappointment regarding Woll's injury:

"It's unfortunate, right? He's been playing so well. He was building such great momentum here on his season and his career. It's a setback here now."

Leafs winger Mitch Marner also weighed in on Woll's exit:

"You don't wish that upon anyone. So, hopefully when news comes back it's somewhat positive. But like I just spoke on, a couple massive saves from [Woll] tonight, and he's been doing it all year for us."

Martin Jones was recalled from AHL's Toronto Marlies as Woll's backup and stepped in for the final 11 minutes in last night's game. Keefe had faith in Jones's abilities and was happy to have him fill in for Woll.

Keefe added,

"The confidence and faith is high [in Jones]. He's a veteran goalie, so a situation like tonight, that wouldn't rattle him."

Despite Woll's absence, the team remains optimistic about the goaltending situation. Jones, with his veteran experience, is seen as a reliable option.

Meanwhile, Ilya Samsonov, close to returning from illness, adds further depth to the goaltending roster.
