The New York Rangers lost 7-4 in a divisional matinee matchup against the Washington Capitals on Saturday at Capital One Arena. The Rangers are on a disastrous 5-16-0 stretch after a promising 12-4-1 start to the season.
The Rangers (17-20-1) are tied for last place in the Metropolitan division with the New York Islanders with 35 points, a drastic drop off from winning the President's Trophy in 2023-24 with a 55-23-4 record and 114 points. The team's 20 regulation losses through 38 games are just three shy of their 82-game season total from last year.
Entering the campaign with Stanley Cup or bust expectations, New York fans are frustrated with how the season has gone for their team. They expressed their anger and disappointment on X after the loss.
"Just end the season already. This is painful," one fan wrote.
"Disappointing," another fan wrote.
"Way to embarrass yourselves on National TV," one fan said.
Rangers fans did not hold back on their criticism of the team. Reactions continued to pour in on X following the loss to Washington.
"Disaster. Fire Everyone. Rebuild," one fan said.
"Thanks for contributing to the Ovi goal chase!!!" another fan wrote.
"You are unbelieveable!! Don't even bother showing up tomorrow! You put yourselves in this position!" another fan commented.
It will be interesting to see what moves Rangers general manager Chris Drury will make leading up to the trade deadline.
The Rangers are back in action on Sunday afternoon
The New York Rangers will have to put Saturday's loss to Washington behind them quickly as they'll be back on the ice on Sunday when they face the Chicago Blackhawks on the road.
Chicago has a 13-24-2 record and last place in the NHL. If New York wants to make any sort of playoff push, games against bottom-of-the-barrel teams like the Blackhawks have to result in a win.
Louis Domingue could be in for his first start of the season with Igor Shesterkin on IR due to an upper-body injury and Jonathan Quick having started on Saturday. The Rangers could be forced to start their third-string goalie.
The puck drops on Sunday at 3 p.m. EST at United Center.
