Buffalo Sabres HC Lindy Ruff's comments after 7-1 win against Islanders
After Buffalo's dominating 7-1 victory over New York, head coach Lindy Ruff was pleased with his team's performance. He said the strong play started in their previous game against Boston, where the Sabres played well defensively despite losing 3-1.
“We're smart with the puck. I think we started off tonight same way, our puck play was real good, our defending was good. And then, when you go through somthing like this, you know, a journey that is awfully painful. When you come out of it, you should be a better team," Ruff said postgame.
Ruff felt some of their problems were not finishing games strong. However, Ruff believes the Sabres have now learned that smarter puck management is the key to closing out games, as evidenced by their poised third-period play when the Islanders tried to rally.
“I think we showed that tonight in the third period when they had a little bit of a push and we had good sticks, you know, we deflected a lot of pucks, we blocked a lot of lanes, we denied a lot of plays in our own end," he added.
The Buffalo Sabres will look to build on this victory when they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night at KeyBank Center.
