The New York Rangers' season is turning into a disaster. After a 12-5-1 start, the team has gone 4-13-0 in its last 17 games. Trading away former captain Jacob Trouba and 2019 second overall pick Kaapo Kakko, as well as scratching Chris Kreider, has not helped.
It has been widely speculated around the NHL that Rangers general manager Chris Drury wants to continue to shake up the roster. Performances like Saturday's 6-2 loss to Tampa Bay will only expedite the process of Drury making more big changes.
New York Post's Larry Brooks wrote a column on Sunday, sharing his opinion on the state of the Rangers. Brooks said that the team has quit on its coach, Peter Laviolette, and he believes that it will cost him his job soon.
"The Rangers have quit on their coach, they have quit on the organization, they have quit on themselves, they have quit on each other, they have quit on the fans who pay top dollar to fill the Garden and they have quit on New York," Brooks wrote.
"Blueshirts Breakaway" podcast host Ryan Mead agreed with Brooks.
"1000 percent agree with Larry here. Unreal," Mead tweeted.
Everyone around the team seems to believe that it needs more drastic changes and that they could come sooner rather than later.
The Rangers continue to slip down the Metropolitan Division standings
In a stunning turn of events, the New York Rangers have fallen to last place in the Metropolitan division. For a team that won the President's Trophy in 2023-24, things couldn't go any worse.
New York is five points out of the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference, with four teams ahead of it in the race.
After a promising 3-1 road win in Dallas on Dec. 20, New York has lost three consecutive games and has been outscored 14-3. The Rangers have managed just 13 goals in their last nine games, a 1.44 goal-per-game rate, not a recipe for success in an offensively driven league.
The New York Rangers will look to somehow turn things around on Monday when they face the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. The puck drops at 7 p.m. EST at Amerant Bank Arena.
