Late NHL player Johnny Gaudreau is set to be honored by his former USHL team. He played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew tragically died on Aug. 29 in a biking accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The brothers were in town for their sister’s wedding and were struck by a car.
According to reports, Johnny’s junior team, the Dubuque Fighting Saints, will retire his jersey number on Saturday.
“Johnny Gaudreau will have his No. 8 jersey retired by the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday. Gaudreau played for Dubuque as a 17-year-old in 2010-11 and helped the team win the Clark Cup as league champions,” Sportsnet tweeted on Friday.
The Fighting Saints also announced that they will donate the revenue from the team's game against the Sioux City Musketeers on Saturday to the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.
Johnny’s No. 8 jersey will be the first one to be retired by the franchise.
"It was an honor befitting of his contribution to the organization and also obviously the sad circumstances that happened," Fighting Saints part owner Peter Luukko said on Friday, via AP. " He was one of the better players in the history of the team."
Johnny and Matthew’s parents Guy and Jane, sisters Katie and Kristen and Johnny’s widow Meredith will attend the event. Johnny and Meredith have two children, and she revealed they were expecting their third child when Johnny died.
USHL Commissioner Glenn Hefferan will reportedly unveil the newly created Gaudreau Award for excellence and dedication to hockey on the occasion.
