Matthew Knies and the Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5-2 to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. John Tavares and Bobby McMann scored for the Leafs while Matt Murray made 27 saves. The Leafs have struggled, going 1-3-0 in their last four games. The Capitals capitalized on key moments with goals from Nic Dowd, Tom Wilson, and Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin's empty-net goal was his 869th career goal.

Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke about the team’s mistakes against the Capitals. He also discussed Matthew Knies’ performance after his injury.

“Today, we showed him a lot of video, and he went over it with us." Berube said, "He’s just got to get more involved. For me, it’s about being a little more reckless. That’s how he played before. He’s a big-bodied guy, skates extremely well, and plays a heavy game."

In the game, Matthew Knies had no points and no shots on goal in 17:16 minutes of time on ice with a minus-two rating. Berube said Knies needs to play more aggressively.

"He needs to bring that recklessness back into his game, get more involved, and focus on the forecheck." Berube mentioned, "It’s about constantly moving, getting to the net, and winning those battles."

In 35 games, he has 19 points including 11 goals and a minus-five rating.

"Before his injury, he was excellent at that, but he just hasn’t reached that level again.” Berube said.

The Leafs need to improve in these areas. They will now look for better execution moving forward.

Matthew Knies is focused on improving his game despite the slump in his second NHL season

Matthew Knies has hit a rough patch in his second NHL season. After a strong start, his production has dropped. A concussion in November didn’t have lasting effects, but he admits his game isn’t as physical as he wants. Knies says the mental side of being a pro player has been tough.

“I think I just need to mentally dial in on the little things that I’ve been lacking,” Knies said (via Athletic.com). “I just haven’t been as tough to play against."

The Leafs' coaches are helping him focus on improving his defensive play and being more aggressive. Knies looks up to Brady Tkachuk and wants to play like him - strong on the puck and tough to play against.

“I don’t think anyone likes to go up against that guy. That’s what I want to be like,” Knies said. “That’s the player I believe I can be.”

Knies remains focused on getting better and helping the Leafs win. With his contract up soon, he’s not worried and wants to be a better player.
