Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube had high praise for Mitch Marner's 700-point milestone. The Maple Leafs right wing became the fastest to achieve 700 career points in the franchise’s history —622 games.
Marner achieved this feat on Thursday night in the Maple Leafs’ game against the New Jersey Devils. The 27-year-old had two assists on the night; one which led to captain Auston Matthews's tying goal late in the third period and the second to set up William Nylander in overtime for the win. The Leafs edged the Devils 4-3 on the night. Berube shared his thoughts about Marner while speaking to the media after the game.
"Yeah, it was pretty incredible. I just found out after the game that it's the fastest in Leafs history. He's a heck of a player. We all know that. You guys have seen him a lot more than me over the years. There's not much he can't do, you know, in terms of the game,” he said.
Marner spoke with the media as well after the game, stating he reached the milestone thanks to support from his teammates.
“It's a cool milestone. Obviously, it doesn't happen without a lot of support around you through the nine years that I've been here. So very fortunate to play with some really great players and some guys that have made it easy for me to do my job. So thankful for the the guys that are around me,” he said.
The Maple Leafs halted their run of three consecutive defeats with the win on Thursday night.
Auston Matthews joins Craig Berube in lauding Mitch Marner
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews lauded Marner for his achievement as well. Matthews was appreciative of his teammate’s achievement. The Maple Leafs captain shared a pic on his Instagram Story commemorating Marner’s achievement. The picture is an autographed card featuring #16 Mitch Marner and mentions his 700 career point achievement.
“Bang,” read the post’s caption, with flame and muscle flex emojis.
Matthews also praised Marner’s performance while speaking to the media after the game.
“That's what he does. You know, he makes big time plays when we need him. And he definitely did that tonight."
Nylander and Matthews scored twice each on the night while Nico Hischier scored two goals and Jack Hughes had a goal and two assists for the Devils.
New Jersey coach Sheldon Keefe, who was fired as HC of the Maple Leafs at the end of last season, remained winless against his former team.
