The Toronto Maple Leafs are dealing with injuries to two key players: defenseman Jake McCabe and goalie Anthony Stolarz. McCabe was placed on injured reserve on Monday after getting hurt in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The team has not set a return timeline for him yet.
NHL insider Jonas Siegel reported on Saturday that Leafs coach Craig Berube is hoping that McCabe won't be sidelined for an extended period.
“I don’t really have a timeline. Hopefully it’s not too long … He’s doing well. That’s the best update I can give you on him,” Siegel tweeted.
McCabe has played 36 games this season. He has 10 assists, 11 points and 37 shots on goal. Additionally, he has 68 blocked shots and 72 hits. The Maple Leafs will know more about his status once he resumes skating.
Stolarz is also recovering from an injury. He had a procedure in mid-December to remove a loose body from his knee after getting hurt in the Dec.12 game against Anaheim. He was expected to be out for 4-6 weeks.
NHL insider Terry Koshan shared an update from Berube on Stolarz, who is signed on a two-year, $5,000,000 contract.
"I think Stolarz will be on his own for a bit (on the ice), but I expect that soon, like maybe this week, I hope, that he can get on the ice and do some things. With us, I don't know yet," Koshan tweeted on Saturday.
Stolarz has a 9-5-2 record with a 2.15 GAA and a .927 save percentage this season. He was placed on injured reserve but was expected to be moved to long-term injured reserve (LTIR) if the Leafs needed cap space.
The team is waiting for more updates on McCabe and Stolarz's recovery.
