The Toronto Maple Leafs are at home to face the Detroit Red Wings on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
Toronto (7-5-2) is coming off a 4-0 home win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Ahead of the divisional game, here is what the Maple Leafs lines are projected to look like.
Maple Leafs projected lines
Forwards
- Matthew Knies - Max Domi - Mitch Marner
- Max Pacioretty - John Tavares - William Nylander
- Bobby McMann - Pontus Holmberg - Nick Robertson
- Steven Lorentz - David Kampf - Ryan Reaves
The big question is the status of captain Auston Matthews, who missed Tuesday's game due to an injury. He's listed as day-to-day but his availability against the Red Wings is up in the air.
“He’s been fighting through it a little bit, so obviously he’s out tonight,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said after Tuesday's morning skate, via NHL.com. “[It has been lingering] a little bit.”
Without Matthews, Berube said other players need to step up.
“Everybody just digs in more,” Berube said. “Different players get different opportunities in a situation like this whether it’s more minutes, they’re on the power play. They elevate their game and everybody needs to elevate their game."
Defensemen
- Morgan Reilly - Oliver Ekman-Larsson
- Jake McCabe - Chris Tanev
- Simon Benoit - Conor Timmins
The Maple Leafs blue line has been a bright spot this season. The pairings have remained the same as all three have been solid.
Goalies
- Joseph Woll
- Anthony Stolarz
Toronto will likely start Woll as Stolarz is expected to get an extra rest day ahead of Saturday's matchup against Montreal.
Woll is 1-2 with a 2.70 GAA and a .892 SV%.
Maple Leafs vs Red Wings: Preview
Toronto played well against Boston and should carry the momentum against Detroit.
The Red Wings have been solid this season, but the Maple Leafs are a step better. Even if Matthews doesn't play, Toronto's defense is tough to beat, and the Red Wings' defense and goaltending have been inconsistent. Toronto should get the win at home.
Prediction: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2.
