Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves has fought 146 times in his 904-game NHL career. At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, he has been known as one of the toughest players in the league.
However, with the lack of fighting in today's NHL, Reaves has yet to drop the gloves this season. He was asked about it during his media availability on Tuesday.
"Yeah, it’s the longest I’ve gone without one," Reaves said, via Leafslatest. "I would like one, for sure. I mean, that’s what I’m here for, or part of the reason I’m here. To not have one this late in the season is new for me. So, I would definitely like one or two soon."
He added that he looks forward to getting into a fight on the ice soon.
"There’s not as many (willing fighters) around," Reaves said. "I think we’ve been on a little stretch where we haven’t played many guys like that. We have a couple coming up here this week, actually. So hopefully I get an opportunity to get one."
Reaves knows his role on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto will face the Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens this week. Reaves will hope to find a dance partner one of these nights.
Ryan Reaves was suspended in November for an illegal check to the head of Darnell Nurse
In an all-Canadian matchup on Nov. 16, Ryan Reaves laid a crushing blow on Darnell Nurse. The Maple Leafs' bruising winger was given a five-minute match penalty for the hit which was deemed an illegal check to the head. He was then suspended for five games by the NHL's Department for Player Safety.
It was the fourth suspension of Reaves' career and the longest ban he has received for his actions.
In the 27 games he's been in the lineup this season, he has recorded just two points (zero goals, two assists) while logging a team-low 7:59 of ice time per game.
Reaves and the Maple Leafs are back in action on Tuesday against the Dallas Stars. The puck drops at 7 p.m. EST at Scotiabank Arena.
