The Toronto Maple Leafs have deep goalkeeping this year. With both Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz, the Leafs have one of the top duos in the net in the entire sport. Whichever one gets the start on a given night is primed to have an outstanding performance. Who will that be on Thursday?
Per hockey reporter David Alter, Stolarz is projected to get the start at home vs. the Anaheim Ducks. Woll is technically the number one on the depth chart, but Stolarz will play tonight.
The goalkeeper has been brilliant since being forced into action at the start of the NHL season. With Woll battling an injury, Stolarz and prospect Dennis Hildeby had to step up, and Stolarz responded well.
As for the rest of the Leafs, this is their expected lineup:
- Forwards:
- LW Matthew Knies - C Auston Matthews - RW Mitch Marner
- LW Max Pacioretty - C John Tavares - RW William Nylander
- LW Steven Lorentz - C Fraser Minten - RW Max Domi
- LW Pontus Holmberg - C Connor Dewar - RW Ryan Reaves
- Defense Pairings:
- Morgan Rielly - Philippe Myers
- Simon Benoit - Chris Tanev
- Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Conor Timmins
- Powerplay Squads:
- Matthew Knies, John Tavares, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, Auston Matthews
- Max Pacioretty, Fraser Minten, Max Domi, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Morgan Rielly
- Penalty Kill Units:
- Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Simon Benoit, Chris Tanev
- Connor Dewar, Steven Lorentz, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Conor Timmins
When healthy, the Leafs have used some variation of the above most of the season. The only question often is whether Stolarz or Woll will be in the net tonight.
Former Maple Leafs coach shouts out Anthony Stolarz
Like Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz has earned the right to start any night. He has been superb so far during the 2024-25 NHL season and also got a major compliment after his last outing.
Sheldon Keefe, who previously coached the Maple Leafs, praised his opponent after a 38-save outing by Stolarz via The Hockey News:
“Best goaltending in the league on the other side of the ice."
Anthony Stolarz made 38 saves and only allowed one goal, which kept Toronto alive until they could bury a winner in overtime to defeat the New Jersey Devils. Stolarz has an 8-5-2 record, a .928 save percentage, and a 2.13 goals-against average this year.
