The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2 on Friday night in a game that saw tempers flare between Flames forward Ryan Lomberg and Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier.
The two dropped gloves in the second period for a fiery tilt that ended with Olivier landing several hard right hands that dropped Lomberg to the ice.
After the game, Olivier gave his perspective on the fight, saying:
"I blacked out. Sorry, I don’t have a better answer for you. I heard the Stone Cold music and I blacked out.”
His teammate Adam Fantilli also commented on the fight, saying:
"He might be the scariest guy on the ice in the league.I’m not gonna lie. I was telling him he should call out Jake Paul when he came in for media with you guys."
The fight seemed to energize the Blue Jackets, who got goals from Fantilli (two), Kirill Marchenko, Zach Werenski and Kent Johnson in the win. Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman scored for the Flames.
Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins had a solid night in net for Columbus, saving 27 of 29 shots. Calgary's Dustin Wolf made 34 saves in the loss.
The game saw the Blue Jackets improve to 10-9-3 on the season, while the Flames dropped to 12-8-4.
Mathieu Olivier's take on Blue Jackets' 5-2 win over the Flames
Mathieu Olivier discussed the Colombus Blue Jackets’ recent strong play and push for the playoffs.
"We're definitely going in the right direction," Mathieu Olivier said (as per NHL.com). "We're still missing some big pieces, but everyone that's playing is doing a really good job, and we’ve just got to find ways to win every night. That's what we're doing right now."
He added:
"Winning is way more fun. Ask anyone, they'll tell you."
Olivier acknowledged there is still work to be done as the team aiming for the playoffs.
"We’re pushing for playoffs here, we have a lot of work to do. This is the time of year that teams separate from others, and this is where we have to bear down and keep going here."
Columbus will look to keep their winning ways going when they face the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday in their next matchup.
