Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm responded to Sportsnet's Mark Spector's question about the team playing better in captain Connor McDavid's absence.
McDavid sustained an ankle injury during the first period against the Columbus Blue Jackets last month. The Oilers played two straight games without their captain, including a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames in the "Battle of Alberta" clash on Sunday.
During the post-game interview, Spector asked Ekhoml:
"This might sound like a dumb question, but I specialize in those. Are there things about not having McDavid playing that can make your team better?"
Mattias Ekholm replied in the negative, emphasizing that McDavid significantly enhances the team's capabilities:
"I don’t think—I think he makes our team way better. But I see where you're coming from, and I see what you're saying. I think that there’s been collectively an effort from guys to step up in his absence, and it's very nice to see Arviddson, Hyman and Jeff Skinner getting goals, obviously Leon’s leading the way.
"So guys have been stepping up. And obviously, when you lose the best player in the world, you're going to have to have the collective — especially the forward group — step up."
Ekholm also acknowledged that with McDavid out, other players have had the chance to gain confidence and find their rhythm. He expressed optimism that when the captain returns, the Oilers will be ready to perform at their best and continue moving forward.
According to recent reports, Connor McDavid might return to the lineup as early as two weeks instead of three. He has accumulated 10 points through three goals and seven assists in as many games for the Oilers this season.
Stuart Skinner reflects on Edmonton Oilers' "Battle of Alberta" win
Stuart Skinner delivered a solid performance in goal for the Oilers during their 4-2 victory over the Flames, making 29 saves and posting an impressive .935 SV%.
During the post-game interview, Skinner reflected on the game:
"I think this group, especially from where we came last year and where we want to go the previous years, it's all experience to help you out, and I think it's definitely been very helpful for us in just the sense of being able to finish a game."
With two points, the Edmonton Oilers improved to 6-5-1 and moved to fourth in the Pacific Division with 13 points. They will be up against the New Jersey Devils on Monday.
