Max Domi has been dealing with a lower-body injury since Nov. 16. Currently on Injured Reserve, he is getting closer to a return. Despite his absence, the Toronto Maple Leafs have continued to perform well, posting a 3-1 record since he last played.
According to TSN analyst Darren Dreger, the $15 million man is nearing his return, but he is still week-to-week. Dreger shared this information during Monday's episode of the "First Up" podcast, saying (42:12):
"Yeah. He is getting closer to a return, but it's the old standby, at least it was last night, and that's that he'll be reevaluated earlier this week. Well, today is a game day, so they might be around the group and there might be some further testing, but we probably aren't going to know a whole lot more until perhaps as early as tomorrow."
Dreger said it ultimately depends on what Craig Berube, first-year coach in Toronto, has to say about Domi.
NHL analyst expands on Max Domi's status
NHL insider Darren Dreger has the inside scoop on how Max Domi is doing in his recovery for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's missed the last four games and could miss another before coming back.
Dreger said there's not much in the way of an official update, but he expects to get something concrete in the next day or two. He said every team has injuries, but remarked on how "wild" it has been for the Maple Leafs on that front.
He said (44:00 and onwards):
"Anybody who is critical of Brad Treliving in the first 10 games of the season, saying—you know, saying and people reported this—that he overplayed his hand with the depth and having players sitting around and juggling and having them in and out of the lineup does do anyone any good."
Domi, along with Joseph Woll and Auston Matthews, has missed time due to injury. Yet, the depth that they have has shined in the wake of these injuries. While they could have struggled during this stretch, instead, they have thrived, winning eight of their last 10 games since Matthews went down and returned.
