Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped their third consecutive game on Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars. The Maple Leafs' high-flying offense has been held to just one goal in their last two games on home ice which has led to frustration among the fanbase.
Toronto fans booed their team during Saturday's 3-0 loss to Vancouver and Tuesday against Dallas. It was surprising as the team is in first place in the Atlantic division with a 27-16-2 record and 56 points.
Marner was asked about the boos from the home crowd and if it has affected him and his teammates.
"Just try to ignore it," Marner said to reporters on Wednesday (01:01). "You know, we're just trying to do our job out there and go out and put together a full 60 and, you know, we got a good practice today, good video session."
Marner is not happy with the team's recent performance, although he doesn't want to blow anything out of proportion. He has made some questionable comments to the media in the past, so it makes sense to hear him remain calm in this situation.
Mitch Marner has been great in the final year of his six-year $65,408,000 contract
It's no secret that Mitch Marner is a pending unrestricted free agent. He is in the last season of a six-year $65,408,000 contract he signed in 2019 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
While an expiring contract can often be a distraction to players, that hasn't been the case with Marner. He is enjoying a career year as he has recorded 60 points (14 points, 46 assists) in just 45 games. He is on pace for 109 points, which would surpass his previous best of 99 in 2022-23.
The superstar winger has proven that he deserves a big amount on his next contract. If Toronto doesn't offer him what he expects, another team could try and sign him in free agency.
Marner and the Maple Leafs will look to get back to their winning ways on Thursday when they host the New Jersey Devils. The puck drops at 7 p.m. EST at Scotiabank Arena.
