The Boston Bruins' surprising 2-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night has sparked an unexpected wave of criticism toward coach Jim Montgomery. The loss snapped Philadelphia's 12-year winless streak in regulation at TD Garden.
Tyson Foerster and Joel Farabee (empty net) scored for the Flyers. Ersson stopped 23 shots while Joonas Korpisalo stopped 17 on the loss.
Social media erupted with harsh critiques, including a dramatic declaration that:
"Monty is a dead man walking."
Another fan wrote:
"Fired Bruce Cassidy for being to hard on the players and now we got soft players and horrible coaches."
Here are more fan reactions:
"Fire Montgomery fire Sweeney fire Neely trade everyone" one fan wrote on X.
"This team has time to figure things out but man they just okay so uninspired and that's the biggest thing for me, where's the identity? Who's voices are the loudest?" another fan wrote.
"Imagine paying money to go to the garden to see your team perform this poorly? Time to fire Jim Montgomery. He shoulda stuck to the booze." a user commented.
"Another embarrassing loss. Once again, Sweeney failed to address the lack of offense on this team. Load up on bottom 6 forwards and wonder why they can’t score. A bottom 6 talent skating on the 1st 2 lines doesn’t make them a top 6 forward." another user wrote on X.
Bruins HC Jim Montgomery on 2-0 loss against Flyers
Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery was frustrated with the lack of production, saying the team is not creating enough scoring chances.
“We’re not making plays. We’re not doing enough to generate high-danger scoring chances,” Montgomery said. “Whether that’s a will to go to those areas or not the right game plan, we’re all culpable for not coming out with a victory tonight.”
He stressed the need for the star players to step up and carry the offensive load, especially on the power play.
"On every team, your best players - your star players - have to carry the weight, the load offensively. Those are the players out on the power play, and right now, offense isn't materializing for us," Montgomery said.
The Bruins will look to rebound from this loss when they face the Hurricanes on Thursday.
