NHL analyst shares brutally honest opinion on Canada's 'non-negotiable' discipline issues at WJC

Carlo Colaiacovo was upset with Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The country has been a true powerhouse, winning more gold medals in the event than anybody else, but they have not inspired hockey analyst in 2025.

Colaiacovo played for the Canadian team plenty of times during his career, and he believes that anyone who has played knows there's a standard that it appears is not being met right now.

He said on First Up (12:00):

"When you play for Canada in these type of tournaments, the first thing you're being taught is to check your ego at the door, because it's about playing for the crest on the front, not the name on the back. And the thing that is non-negotiable when you're playing in these short tournaments, you represent your country, the number one thing that is discussed all the time is discipline."

The former Toronto Maple Leafs star added:

"For Canada to be as undisciplined as they've been, not just in the one game, but all tournament and the most frustrating thing to watch as a former player, is when Canada, these Canada players, have taken penalties, and the frustration that these players have shown when they take in those penalties."

He believes European refereeing is different than North American refereeing, which the Canadian team is used to. Nevertheless, he believes the discipline is lacking regardless of who's umpiring the contests.

Canada drops group title to USA in crushing WJC defeat

At the WJC, the United States is the defending champion, but Canada is the true powerhouse. Even in recent memory, the Canadians have won the event more than most other teams.

They're not off to a strong start in 2025, though. In a crucial match with the USA, the Canadian WJC team lost 4-1. It gave the United States the Group A win, dropping the Canadians to third.

Canada will move on, but having only the fifth-most points in the entire competition through the group stage is not indicative of a future champion. Sweden had the most points with 12, and the USA was second with 10.
