NHL analyst Mike Johnson suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs consider placing captain Auston Matthews on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to free up salary cap space before the trade deadline.
Sports journalist Michael Distefano highlighted that this move could provide the team with approximately $14 million in cap space, which could be used to enhance their roster.
During a recent episode of TNT's "Overdrive" show, Johnson reiterated the potential financial benefits of placing Matthews on LTIR. However, Johnson also stressed the importance of Matthews' health, suggesting that if he is unable to stay healthy during games, it might be best for him to take a break and focus on recovery.
"Think of all the money. Have you thought of the 14 million bucks you can go spend on someone else. Absolutely. Think about loading up the forwards with that group if you were able to save the money. But I'm not going down the road but, I'm with you," Johnson said (14:18).
"If he's not healthy and he can't stay healthy while playing then let him get healthy while not playing, and the only concern is, it's something, whatever it is that won't get healthy by April," he added.
Auston Matthews missed his second consecutive game against the Winnipeg Jets on Monday after re-aggravating an upper-body injury sustained during the Leafs' matchup with the Buffalo Sabres last week.
The injury occurred when Sabres defenseman Dennis Gilbert cross-checked Matthews in the third period. Head coach Craig Berube stated that Matthews' inclusion in the lineup for the game against the Detroit Red Wings on December 27 will depend on his condition as they approach the game.
Insider shares optimistic update about Auston Matthews' injury
During a recent podcast, NHL Insider Chris Johnston provided an optimistic update on Auston Matthews' injury. He indicated that the Leafs have a clear understanding of the situation, eliminating any uncertainities about other potential injuries.
"I think they feel they have a good handle on what it is, and obviously he's receiving treatment for that. And there's just, there is the belief that he's going to get to a point where his most healthy moments of the season are still to come, versus already being in a rerearviewirror"
Matthews has recorded 23 points this season, with 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games.
