When the Red Wings faced the Stanley Cup-winning Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon, they were hoping to benefit from having had a few days off. Early on, Detroit was holding on, but the Avalanche dominated them in the final two periods, winning 5-1.

Detroit has now dropped three straight games, is still eighth in the Atlantic Division, and nine points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the last Eastern Conference Wild Card place.

The Florida Panthers (NHL) are positioned fourth from the top of the standings. They may not be as strong as the President's Trophy winner from the previous year, but they still have a chance to return to the postseason.

The Panthers are just one back of the Pens for the final slot in the East after their victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, and they have a few games left to play.

They have won each of the first two meetings between the two teams this season, including a 3-2 victory over Detroit back in January. This will be the third and final game between the two teams this season.
