Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrik Laine has requested a trade and it seems likely it will come to fruition at some point. Laine is a former second-overall pick and is in need of a change of scenery.
Laine has struggled with consistency and staying healthy with the Blue Jackets, however, there is already one team rumored to be interested in him — the Montreal Canadiens. But what could a trade proposal look like for Laine?
What a Patrik Laine to Montreal Canadiens package would look like
If Columbus wants NHL players, the first proposal could be:
Montreal gets:
- Patrik Laine
Columbus gets:
- Jordan Harris
- Josh Anderson
- 2025 second-round pick (Pittsburgh's)
Laine's trade value is very much up in the air as he has shown flashes of being a dominant player, but more times than not, has struggled mightily. This deal would give Columbus an NHL forward in Josh Anderson to replace Laine, as well as defenseman Jordan Harris who is 24 years old and would be a nice piece to help the Blue Jackets rebuild, as well as getting a second-round pick.
But, there have been reports that Columbus would rather have prospects and picks for Laine than NHL players. If that is the case, here is another mock trade.
Montreal gets:
- Patrik Laine ($2.2 million retained)
Columbus gets:
- Owen Beck
- Luck Tuch
- 2025 second-round pick (Pittsburgh)
This trade involves prospects for Columbus as Owen Beck could play in the NHL next season. He is projected to be a bottom-six forward who is a solid defensive center. Beck is only 20 years old and was drafted 33rd overall in the 2022 NHL draft.
Luke Tuch, meanwhile, was a 2020 second-round pick and is the younger brother of Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch. Luke has a similar profile to Beck, but if he turns into his brother, it would be a massive return for Columbus.
Ultimately, the Blue Jackets aren't going to get a top-level prospect for Laine right now, especially due to his play in recent years.
