On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers placed Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers. Hours later, NHL insider Chris Johnston said that the player could likely file a grievance.
The Flyers put Johansen on unconditional waivers due to a material breach, but not much detail was given about what he did.
Johansen was acquired by the Flyers at the NHL trade deadline on March 6 from the Colorado Avalanche. The forward was then placed on waivers, cleared waivers, and was assigned to the AHL.
However, Johansen had an existing injury that was discovered during the trade, which means he could not be sent down to the AHL. Meaning he had to be on the NHL roster and not play for the Flyers.
Back in June, Flyers GM Daniel Briere said he wasn't sure what Johansen's injury status was.
"If he's healthy he would be in [training] camp and have the chance to show us what he can do," Briere said, via NHL.com. "If he's not and he needs surgery, then he'll have to go through that."
Johansen was drafted fourth overall in the 2010 NHL draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He's skated in 905 NHL games, recording 202 goals and 376 assists for 578 points.
Ryan Johansen's agent disappointed with Flyers move
After the Flyers' latest decision, agent Kurt Overhardt said that Johnasen suffered a serious hockey injury that required surgery.
Overhardt claims that his client has been working in good faith with the Flyers to discuss the surgery, his rehab, and possible return to the ice.
However, Philadelphia still decided to put him on unconditional waivers, so Overhardt said he and the NHLPA plan on defending Johansen.
"Ryan Johansen has a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery which has been scheduled. Since being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, Ryan has worked in good faith with the Club, its medical staff, and authorized third party physicians," Overhardt said in a statement, via ESPN. "The Flyers' attempt to terminate Ryan's contract is disappointing. We have been in contact with the NHLPA and will defend Ryan and protect his rights," he added.
Johansen had one year left on his eight-year $64 million deal, as he was set to make $8 million this season.
