The New York Rangers won their third straight game today, beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers were coming off a 5-4 win against the Calgary Flames. The game was very physical and two fights broke out on the ice, which resulted in multiple penalties for both teams.
The Rangers were looking to extend their winning streak against the suffering Canucks, who had lost five of their last seven games heading into this matchup.
Chris Kreider got the ball rolling for the Rangers in the first period when he was completely unmarked on the right wing, slapping the puck into the net.
Twenty-three-year-old forward Filip Chytil made it 2-0 for the home team from a pass by K'Andre Miller, making it two assists for the defenseman.
Connor Garland got one back for the visitors minutes before the end of the first period.
Alexis Lafreniere, the hero for the New York Rangers against Calgary on Monday, put his side 3-1 up in the second period. Vasily Podkolzin made it 3-2 with four minutes left on the clock in the second period.
Mika Zibanejad gave the Rangers a two-goal lead with his 25th goal for the team, the most scored by a Ranger this season. But Elais Pettersson made it 4-3 just seconds later, with Quinn Hughes assisting on his 42nd of the season.
Goalie Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves in the game and had a .880 SV%.
New York Rangers to get busy before the trade deadline
The New York Rangers had a good offense coming into this season. Their star forwards Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad have had close to career-high seasons, which has resulted in the Rangers sitting in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 29-14-8 record.
The New York Rangers will be looking to bolster their attack even further heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs. They are rumored to be in the market for one or more players like Timo Meier, the San Jose Sharks forward who has been linked to many teams heading into the trade deadline. The 26-year-old has been great for the Sharks and has scored 30 goals and provided 21 assists this season.
Another player the Rangers might bring in is Vladimir Tarasenko. The Blues have had a rather disappointing season and might be looking to trade away their key players for future prospects. Tarsenko has been instrumental in their offense and will add firepower to any team he joins.
Chicago Blackhawks veteran Patrick Kane is also rumored to be leaving after spending his entire career with the Blackhawks. His experience as a three-time Stanley Cup champion will be detrimental to the Rangers or any other team that is looking to make a run into the playoffs.
The New York Rangers have potential trade prospects that will help them sign any of the players mentioned above. The prospects include Filip Chytil, Alexis Lafreniere, and K’Andre Miller, all of whom will be requiring new deals by the end of the season.
If the Rangers cannot manage to fit in all three players, it's likely they will look to trade them in exchange for future prospects.
