The Carolina Hurricanes appear hungry to make a splash ahead of the 2025 NHL trade deadline. Several weeks ago Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said the Hurricanes were plotting big swings both up front and in goal. It sounds like one of those big swings could involve a $92,800,000 disgruntled Vancouver Canucks star.

It's been made clear in recent days that the Canucks are listening to trade offers on Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. It would make plenty of sense for the Carolina Hurricanes to get in the mix to acquire either of their services.

Insider Chris Johnston spoke on TSN's Insider Trading segment Tuesday evening. He brought up the Carolina Hurricanes as a suitor for Elias Pettersson:

"Just given the magnitude of a trade potentially involving either these players, and obviously the marketplace in Vancouver has been hot, but in speaking with sources around the league, what I can tell you is there's a strong sense that trade conversations remain active on both Pettersson and Miller with rival teams at this point in time. ...
"Vancouver wants to gage the marketplace, see what the value of the players is, before making any further decisions on next steps."

Johnston added:

"When it comes to Petterson in particular, it seems as though the Canucks are serious about considering moving him. Multiple teams believed to have shown interest, and a third party source points out the Carolina and Vancouver did have discussions on Pettersson last season.
"So, that could be a logical landing place now, but to multiple teams as I mentioned, interested and much to consider for the Canucks."

Elias Pettersson is currently day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, though his return appears to be imminent. Through 34 games, Pettersson has put up 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) to begin the 2024-25 campaign. He is the first year of a eight-year, $92,800,000 contract.

Carolina Hurricanes have shown interest in Elias Pettersson in the past

This is not the first time that the Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly intrigued by the potential of acquiring Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson. As Chris Johnston mentioned on TSN's insider trading, the 'Canes and Canucks had trade discussions involving the 26-year-old Swede last season.

This came in January 2024 when Pettersson and the team's contract talks were stalling. It was reported that players such as Martin Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi were part of a potential package in return.

It will be fascinating to see how it all plays out. Undoubtedly, the 'Canes will face plenty of competition in attempting to trade for Pettersson.

The Carolina Hurricanes (24-15-2) are next in action on Thursday night as they host the red-hot Toronto Maple Leafs (27-13-2) at Lenovo Center. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. EST.
