According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Winnipeg Jets have talked to the Montreal Canadiens about Pierre-Luc Dubois. There's the possibility of the Habs getting Dubois earlier than expected.
Dubois was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in January 2021 and is set to become a restricted free agent after this season.
Friedman said on the podcast:
“I think the Jets have talked to the Canadiens on and off about Dubois. We know Dubois is going to end up there 95%. Is there some way we make the deal so the Canadiens get him earlier and we get something we want? I think they’ve talked about that, but they haven’t been able to make the deal.”
The Canadiens, currently in a rebuilding phase, may have no interest in giving up any prospects or draft picks for Dubois when they know they can potentially get him for nothing in a year. However, the Jets may want something in return for Dubois, even if it means losing him earlier than expected.
This situation has shades of the Jacob Trouba saga, where the former Jets defenseman only wanted to be traded to the New York Rangers. Trouba was eventually traded to the Rangers in 2019 for a package of players and draft picks.
It remains to be seen how Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will handle this situation. The Jets could choose to keep Dubois and try to sign him to a long-term contract, or they could trade him to a team willing to give up the assets they are looking for.
It remains to be seen how the Dubois situation will play out. It will also be interesting to see how it impacts the Jets and the rest of the league going forward.
