Trevor Zegras' future in Anaheim is up in the air. There have been trade and free agency rumors surrounding the talented center. He's still new to the league, being drafted in 2019 and debuting the year after, but his future might be in a different uniform.
To that end, hockey insider Chris Johnston has heard some things about Zegras. He believes the team likes having him and is happy with where he's at, but that doesn't mean the right move is keeping him in the future.
Johnston said on his eponymous podcast:
"It does sound like the Ducks are happy with him. There have been maybe some of those things that they've questioned him in the past, whether it's his habits, defense, attention to detail, things like that. So I'm not certainly saying he won't be traded, but I don't think he's going to be up at the top of the trade board whenever it gets dusted off, because I do think that the atmosphere has shifted a little bit around him."
Zegras hasn't played very well this season for the Anaheim Ducks. He has played 14 games and recorded one goal and two assists. He hasn't been on the ice much either, with just over 17 minutes.
Devils adding Trevor Zegras makes sense for the team
Whether or not Trevor Zegras is going to be traded remains to be seen, but the New Jersey Devils would make sense for the young center and they've been linked to him. He fits a need for their current roster and has the upside that they could tap into.
He would enhance both their speed and skill among the top six in their lines now. Of course, trading for a young player with team control and a cheap salary will cost them draft picks, but it's worth the risk.
The potential return in adding a young, possibly untapped star to their roster is worth a few draft selections down the road.
The only question remains whether or not Anaheim is willing to move on. They're currently 5-7-2 on the season and could sell assets to continue rebuilding in the future.
