The Dallas Stars continued their hot streak after the NHL All-Star break with a 4-1 win over NHL Central Division rivals the Minnesota Wild. Multiple Dallas players were involved in the win, most notably Jake Oettinger, who shut down Kirill Kaprizov with a dynamic Wild attack.
Dallas fans were ecstatic to see the Stars win against a conference opponent, their second win in a row since the All-Star Break. The first came against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.
Fans were even more excited not to see the Stars head to overtime again after they did so against the Ducks. In the three games leading up to the All-Star Break, they went to overtime and lost on each occasion. That wasn't the case against the Wild, as they walked away as victors.
Dallas fans were most ecstatic about the play of their decorated captain, Jamie Benn. Benn, who has been saddled this season around young developing talent on his line, was responsible for sparking an electric second period for the home team. His goal that lit the lamp 23 seconds into the second frame.
Fans were also excited by the emergence of Jani Hakanpaa, who scored the third goal of the night off a pass from Jason Robertson. Hakanpaa’s third goal would be enough to collect him the first “Star” of the game in the crucial win.
Most of all, Dallas fans were quick to rub it in to their rivals from the north. The former Minnesota North Stars were quick to recognize Texas, not Minnesota, as the “State of Hockey”... at least for the night.
Here's how NHL Twitter reacted to the win:
Benn nets 20th goal of season as Stars rout Minnesota
The Dallas offense excelled, especially in the second period, against Minnesota. In a span of 11 minutes, they scored three goals, which effectively ended the contest. Jamie Benn, who netted his 20th of the season, electrified the crowd by skating and deking around a sprawling Filip Gustavsson to put the Stars up by one.
Other goals included some pretty nice shots from Radek Faksa and Jani Hakanpaa. They were both set up with passes from key players in the team's rotation: Tyler Seguin and Jason Robertson.
Defensively, Dallas shut down the Wild in all phases of the game. The Wild were shut out 5-5, with their lone goal coming from a power play due to a cross-check penalty. Jake Oettinger was electric, making 39 saves on 40 shots.
