NHL analyst Craig Button has some strong advice for the Vancouver Canucks ahead of the NHL's March 7 trade deadline.
The Canucks are just outside a wild card playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 22-17-10 record after winning their Monday night game against the St. Louis Blues.
However, Button believes their performances this season have fallen far short of expectations, having won the Pacific Division last year and generating excitement coming into this season:
"There's no case to be patient here. I mean, the Vancouver Canucks, when you look at their record this season, their performance this year, it is far below what their expectations are. You look at what they did last year, winning the Pacific Division and all the excitement coming into this season.
"There's not excitement anymore in Vancouver. There is a lot of like, 'What is going on here?,' and things need to be fixed." (2:24)
He advised new Canucks GM Patrick Allvin that patience shouldn't be a part of his vocabulary right now. Instead, Button believes that Allvin needs to be bold and focus on improving his team before they potentially fall further out of playoff contention.
Two players surrounded by trade rumors are J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, largely due to reports of a rift between the two. Miller was rumored to be close to a trade back to the New York Rangers, while reports indicate more teams are pushing to try to acquire him before the deadline.
Analyst Cam Robinson on Vancouver Canucks' decision: Elia Pettersson could be moved over J.T. Miller
According to hockey analyst Cam Robinson, the Vancouver Canucks may be more willing to trade young star Elias Pettersson rather than veteran J.T. Miller. The Canucks have been shopping Miller but haven't received offers to their liking.
“Don't be surprised to hear the Elias Pettersson trade talk ramp back up. Vancouver is unhappy with the offers for Miller, and it'll be a lot easier to recoup value in a Pettersson deal,” Robinson said.
Robinson notes that there were rumors of a potential Pettersson trade with Carolina before the Hurricanes acquired Mikko Rantanen from Colorado. If Pettersson is indeed moved, Robinson expects Miller won't be far behind. Miller has reportedly requested a trade out of Vancouver.
With the Canucks potentially blowing up their core, Robinson pointed out that no one's job seems safe - including other young stars like Brock Boeser, Thatcher Demko and Quinn Hughes.
