Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno was brutally honest about the trade that sent forward Taylor Hall to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

The Blackhawks, who are second last in the league with a 15-28-5 record, traded Hall as part of a three-team deal also involving the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks.

"We have no one else to blame but ourselves really in putting ourselves in the situation where they have to start thinking about the future and selling off," Foligno said of the trade (per NHL.com).
"It’s not a fun feeling for anybody in here. When you’ve been a part of it a couple of times in my career, not too many, you lose some good friends."

Foligno and Hall became close friends during the latter's short tenure in Chicago after being traded from Boston on June 26, 2023.

The Blackhawks captain acknowledged the harsh reality of the trade business, especially when teams are struggling.

"In the same breath, it’s the business we understand and when you’re not where you’re supposed to be and guys are on expiring contracts, it’s the harsh reality of decisions that management has to make," Foligno said.

Foligno was excited for Hall to have a chance at the playoffs with the Hurricanes, who sit second in the Metropolitan Division with a 30-16-3 record.

The blockbuster three-team trade sent Hall and Mikiko Rantanen to Carolina, while the Avalanche received forwards Jack Drury, Martin Necas, a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick from Carolina.

The Blackhawks regained their 2025 third-round pick in the deal and will retain Rantanen’s 50% salary.

Taylor Hall anticipated trade after Blackhawks' disappointing season

Taylor Hall had acknowledged earlier this month that he expected to be traded before the NHL's deadline.

"There's always a bright spot and there's always a positive you can take going on forward." Hall said.
"Everyone in a contract year knows there's a lot of different ways things can go. I'm ready for anything. I have a great wife who is always ready for a good adventure, and if that's here or if that's somewhere else, we'll figure it out."

Taylor Hall is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Hall has 9 points and 24 points in 46 games this season.
