NHL Insider shared his perspective on player growth
Load management is now common in the NHL to help young players handle the demanding 82-game season. Craig Johnson, a former assistant coach, explained how it benefits rookies like Leo Carlsson (Ducks) and Will Smith (Sharks).
Carlsson moved from Sweden's lighter schedule to the NHL at 18 and needed strength training. Smith skipped back-to-back games early to focus on long-term growth.
As coaches, you never want to see a player like Carlsson sit out," Johnson wrote (via NHL.com). ... "But for the benefit of the young player in the long run, sitting out certain games gives him time to go into the gym, so he's able to work out and get stronger.
Players like Matty Beniers adapted faster due to college experience. But overall, the newly drafted players need to grow stronger.
