Montreal Canadiens defense prospect Lane Hutson impressed former NHL star P.K. Subban after a jaw-dropping saucer pass during a recent scrimmage at the Habs' training camp.
Subban took note of the slick move on social media, commenting:
"Evades pressure, 20 foot SAUCER Breakout pass tape to tape, all in motion with HEAD UP.... Not sure you can teach that. MMMMMMMHM! Let’em Cook!"
The 20-year-old Hutson was selected 62nd overall by the Canadiens in the 2022 NHL entry draft. He got a brief taste of NHL action last season, playing two games and notching two assists. But it's the potential he's shown at the junior and college level that has Montreal excited.
In 38 games last season with Boston University, the defenseman posted 15 goals and 34 assists.
His creativity and puck control abilities have caught the eye of teammates like Cole Caufield, who called Hutson's game "pretty special." Caufield elaborated:
"His skating, his agility, his way of getting out of certain situations and into space is cool. He can find anybody at any time." (as per nhltradetalk.com)
Fans react to Lane Hutson's saucer pass at Canadiens' training camp
Fans are abuzz following Lane Hutson's jaw-dropping saucer pass to Emil Heineman. Social media platforms have exploded with excitement as supporters share their awe at the young defenseman's skill.
One fan tweeted:
"Lane Hutson is shaping up to be the best pick the habs made in recent years. The kid has so much talent."
Another exclaimed:
"Wow, I don't believe what I just saw, kid's got a future in the game."
Here are some fan reactions:
"The last time we were that excited about a rookie defenseman was when you came on the scene in Montreal PK!" one fan wrote on X.
"Then he does that in a real game, opponent grabs it mid-air, goes in alone and scores" another fan joked.
"Game recognizing game, I guess. Similarly I can think of a few former Habs that recognize a complete inability to score a goal when its literally served up for them when they see it..." a user commented.
"Habs tend to draft really good D in the 2nd round" another user commented.
Many Canadiens are now eagerly anticipating Hutson's potential impact on the team's future.
